Founded in 1821, Lawrenceville was named after Captain James Lawrence, a War of 1812 naval hero famous for his dying words, “Don’t give up the ship.” Early settlers chose his name to honor the fighting spirit they believed would help their new community thrive as the county seat of Gwinnett County.
